Spiegel attended Art Center College of Design; studied Product Design at Stanford University and dropped out of the university in 2012. In 2011, Spiegel, Frank Brown, and Robert Cornelius Murphy began developing Snapchat, a photo messaging application. Spiegel, Brown and Murphy formed the Toyopa Group, a partnership company which developed Snapchat; Spiegel also serves as the CEO of Snapchat.
